Description

The historic fortress known as Mukachevo Castle, or Palanok Castle, stands proudly atop a hill in Mukachevo, Ukraine, commanding a view of the city and its surroundings. Originating in the 14th century, this castle has a captivating history marked by various expansions and renovations.

Initially erected as a defensive bastion by the noble Drugeth family of Hungary, the castle evolved over time to become a crucial stronghold, safeguarding trade routes and repelling invasions from forces such as the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburgs. In the 17th century, it fell under the patronage of the Rakoczi family, who transformed it into a splendid Renaissance-style residence, adorned with lavish apartments, chapels, and gardens.

Through the ages, Mukachevo Castle endured numerous conflicts and changes in ownership, enduring sieges and captures during significant events like the Thirty Years' War and the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849. Today, it stands as a revered tourist destination, showcasing the region's cultural legacy through museums, exhibitions, and cultural events, preserving its status as a historic gem.
