Description

In 1989–1991, Poland engaged in a democratic transition which put an end to the People's Republic of Poland and led to a democratic regime, called the Polish Third Republic. Tension grew between the people of Poland and its communist government, as with the rest of the Eastern bloc as the influence of the Soviet Union faded. In December 1989, the Sejm approved the government's reform program to transform the Polish economy rapidly from centrally planned to free-market, amended the constitution to eliminate references to the "leading role" of the Communist Party, and renamed the country the "Republic of Poland". The May 1990 local elections were entirely free. Candidates supported by Solidarity's Citizens' Committees won most of the elections they contested. In December 1990, Lech Wałęsa became the first popularly elected President of Poland.

Reverse

In the foreground – the Victoria gesture (V sign) which is a symbol of victory and freedom. In the background – a contour of the map of Poland on a stylized decorative surface. In the upper part of the coin, along the rim – the name of the coin in Polish: 25th Anniversary of Freedom. In the lower part of the coin – elements in the form of dots.

The V sign is a hand gesture in which the index and middle fingers are raised and parted, while the other fingers are clenched. It has various meanings, depending on the cultural context and how it is presented. In Poland during the Solidarity movement, protesters showed the V sign meaning they would defeat Communism.
