Description

Following the accession to the throne of King Willem-Alexander, a new series of euro coins was issued depicting the effigy of the new Head of State. Willem-Alexander (born 27 April 1967) is the King of the Netherlands. He became Prince of Orange as heir apparent upon his mother's accession on 30 April 1980, and succeeded her following her abdication on 30 April 2013.

It is customary in the Netherlands to alter the direction in which the Monarch is looking whenever a new Monarch mounts the throne - so while Beatrix was looking towards the left, Willem-Alexander is looking towards the right.

Obverse

A stylised profile of King William-Alexander surrounded by 12 stars. The effigy is separated in two parts by an area with a vertical line. At the left of the vertical line, reading from bottom to top, the mark of the National Mint Director, the text "Willem-Alexander" and the Royal Dutch Mint mark. At the right of the vertical line, reading from top to bottom, the title "King of the Netherlands" in Dutch. At the bottom left of the effigy the year of issuance.

Mint mark: Caduceus (Mercury's wand, a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings), the logo of the Royal Dutch Mint (Utrecht, the Netherlands)

Mint master mark:
• Sailboat (Maarten Brouwer, 2014-2015)
• Sailboat+star (Kees Bruinsma, 2015-2016)
• Sailboat+star (Ted Peters, 2017)
• Sint Servaas bridge (Stephan Satijn, 2017-2021)
• Raven (Bert van Ravenswaaij, 2022–present)

The star indicates that the piece was struck at the beginning of the term of office of a successor.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the left side of the coin.

12 stars are located on the left side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “0” in “20.”
