Description

Following the accession to the throne of King Willem-Alexander, a new series of euro coins was issued depicting the effigy of the new Head of State. Willem-Alexander (born 27 April 1967) is the King of the Netherlands. He became Prince of Orange as heir apparent upon his mother's accession on 30 April 1980, and succeeded her following her abdication on 30 April 2013.

It is customary in the Netherlands to alter the direction in which the Monarch is looking whenever a new Monarch mounts the throne - so while Beatrix was looking towards the left, Willem-Alexander is looking towards the right.

In 2017 the Dutch Royal Mint (KNM) celebrated the introduction of the new mint mark (St Servaas Bridge) of Stephan Satijn with 4 sets:
• A BU coincard containing the regular 2 euro coin with the new mint mark (20 000 pieces).
• A proof box containing the regular 2 euro coin with the new mint mark (2000 pieces).
• A BU set containing 5 sets (2x2015, 2016, 2x2017) of all 8 denominations wearing the 3 different mint marks (sailboat, sailboat+star, bridge) of the last 3 years (5000 pieces).
• Accordingly, the same five-part set issued in a wooden proof box (1000 pieces).

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
