Obverse

Depicts a stylised German eagle with 12 stars representing the European Union. The state name and fineness below. The issue year, the denomination, and a mintmark above the eagle.

The coat of arms of Germany displays a black eagle with red feet, beak and tongue on a golden field. This is the Bundesadler or "Federal Eagle", formerly the Reichsadler or "Imperial Eagle". It is a re-introduction of the coat of arms of the Weimar Republic (in use 1919–1935) adopted by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1950. The current official design is due to Tobias Schwab (1887–1967) and was introduced in 1928.

Reverse

Depicts a collage of the most famous scenes from the fairy tale "Frau Holle" - it shows how she shakes the pillows at the open window so that it snows on the ground. In an archway below are the two stepsisters who could not be more different from each other. While the kind and diligent sister is rewarded with a golden rain after her work, only thick drops of black pitch fall on the lazy one.
