The Presidency of the Council of the European Union is responsible for the functioning of the Council of the European Union, the upper house of the EU legislature. It rotates among the member states of the EU every six months. The presidency is not an individual, but rather the position is held by a national government. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as the President of the European Union. The presidency's function is to chair meetings of the Council, determine its agendas, set a work programme and facilitate dialogue both at Council meetings and with other EU institutions.
The Slovak Presidency of the Council took place during the second half of 2016, taking over from Netherlands and passing it to Malta.

To the right of the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic is the year “2016”. Around the edge of the inner circle are the country name “Slovakia” and the inscription “Slovak Presidency of the EU Council”, which are separated by graphical symbols. The mintmark of the Kremnica Mint, composed of the letters “MK” between two dies, and the stylised initials of the designer “VP”, are placed in the lower part of the composition. The coin´s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
