Description

The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the 31st Olympiad and commonly known as Rio 2016, was a major international multi-sport event held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 August to 21 August 2016.

More than 11,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees, including first time entrants Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Refugee Olympic Team, took part. With 306 sets of medals, the games featured 28 Olympic sports, including rugby sevens and golf, which were added to the Olympic program in 2009. These sporting events took place at 33 venues in the host city, and at five in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília, and Manaus.

Depicts a design by Joana Vasconcelos, whose three-dimensional crochet work, "Independent Red Heart", was incorporated onto the coin. The iconic piece, created in 2005, is inspired by the “Heart of Viana,” a traditional design from the northern Portuguese region of Viana do Castelo. It features five main geometric segments, with the largest heart-shaped element at the base and the upper portions of two hearts stacked on top.

Multiple curlicues, loosely resembling rings, evoke the familiar Olympic logo.

The artist’s name on the left edge, “PORTUGAL’S 2016 OLYMPIC TEAM” on the right, mintmark below. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
