Description

The second commemorative coin of Portugal for 2016 is dedicated to the iconic harbour bridge of Lisbon (Ponte 25 de Abril).

Obverse

Depicts the bridge, with inscriptions listing the nation’s name and the newer name of the bridge, as well as dual dates 1966 and 2016. The designer’s name and the mint mark (INCM) below. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Ponte 25 de Abri (the 25 de Abril Bridge) is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and a train platform was added in 1999. Because it is a suspension bridge and has similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US.

Ponte 25 de Abri was originally named after the dictator Salazar but had its name changed after the revolution of April 25, 1974. With an overall length of 2278 m and the longest central span in Europe (1013 m / 3323 ft). Its foundations also hold the world record by going 80 m below the riverbed to stand on basalt rock.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
