'QUINQUE CORONÆ' - 5 Corona This double-headed eagle with the majestic sword and imperial orb is a symbol of the House of Habsburg. As ‘lords of the air’, eagles were always taken as a favourite identification symbol for rulers. It is a symbol generally denoting a claim to succession or cultural heritage from the Roman Empire. It was used by both the Byzantine Empire (the Roman Empire), and the Holy Roman Empire, wherefrom stems its use in Eastern and Western Europe respectively. In the West it fell out of official use with the disintegration of Austria-Hungary, whereas in the East it continues to be used in the coat of arms of Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania, all in connection to its Byzantine use. It is also used in the flag of the Greek Orthodox Church.
