Description

The Royal Mint launched the commemorative coins celebrating the 30th anniversary of Wallace and Gromit.

Wallace and Gromit is a British stop motion clay animation comedy series created by Nick Park of Aardman Animations. The series consists of four short films and one feature-length film, but has spawned numerous spin-offs and TV adaptations. The series centres on Wallace, a good-natured, eccentric, cheese-loving inventor, along with his companion Gromit, a silent yet loyal and intelligent anthropomorphic dog. Because of their widespread popularity, the characters have been described as positive international cultural icons of both modern British culture and British people in general.

The first short film, A Grand Day Out, was finished and made public in the year 1989. Wallace was originally voiced by veteran actor Peter Sallis, and later by Ben Whitehead. Gromit always remains silent, instead communicating only through means of facial expressions and body language.

The George IV State Diadem, officially the Diamond Diadem, is a type of crown that was made in 1820 for King George IV. The diadem is worn by queens and queens consort in procession to coronations and State Openings of Parliament. The piece of jewellery has been featured in paintings and on stamps and currency. It can be seen in the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSATRIX means Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith.

Reverse

Depicts the Wallace and Gromit as if peering from the porthole of the rocket that took them to the moon. The inscription ‘Cracking cheese’ in Latin appears on the top.

The design was inspired by the original short film A Grand Day Out which was first screened in 1989. The film saw the pair build and launch a rocket ship to the moon where they tuck in to a picnic of moon cheese and crackers.
