Description

Josip Plemelj (1873–1967) was a Slovene mathematician, whose main contributions were to the theory of analytic functions and the application of integral equations to potential theory. He was the first chancellor of the University of Ljubljana.

Obverse

Depicts parts of the equation that Josip Plemelj was the first to solve in the world. Numbers and symbols rotate in circles that illustrate the rotation of the planets, movement in space and at the same time the merging of individual insoluble elements into a whole. It combines Plemelj's two areas of work and research, mathematics and astronomy. The issuing country "SLOVENIJA", the year "2023" and the reason for issuing "JOSIP PLEMELJ 1873" are incorporated into the circles of numbers and letters. The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer coin ring.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
