Description

Pietro Perugino (c. 1446/1452 – 1523), born Pietro Vannucci, was an Italian Renaissance painter of the Umbrian school, who developed some of the qualities that found classic expression in the High Renaissance. Raphael was his most famous pupil.

Obverse

Depicts Pietro Perugino’s portrait (self-portrait, 1497–1500) and a detail from the Baptism of Christ fresco. Positioned in a semi-circle at the top right is the inscription 'CITTÀ DEL VATICANO'. The bottom part of the coin bears the inscription 'PERUGINO' with the corresponding dates '1523◦2023' beneath it. On the left side, you'll find the mintmark 'R'. The outer ring of the coin features 12 stars representing the European flag.

The Baptism of Christ is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Pietro Perugino and his workshop, executed around 1482 and located in the Sistine Chapel, Rome. The scene follows a symmetrical pattern, typical of Perugino. In the centre is the Jordan River flowing towards the observer and reaching the feet of Jesus and John, who is baptizing the former.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
