Depicts a painter's palette, the descending spirit and "The Swan of Tounela" painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

The water below the swan is waving from the descending spirit. The indication of the issuing country ‘FI’ is at the right end of the horizon line. At the bottom of the design there is the artist's palette with Gallen-Kallela's year of birth ‘1865’ and the year of issuance ‘2015’. Next to the pallet is the logo of the Mint of Finland. The artist's name is on the ring of the coin, below the horizon line. The coin's outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela is best known for his paintings of scenes from the Kalevala, which is a 19th century work of epic poetry exploring Finnish oral folklore and mythology. This epic poem is considered instrumental in the development of Finland's national identity. The "Tuonelan joutsen" (Swan of death) shows up in the epic where it is being hunted in the River of Death. In 1895, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius composed a musical piece called "The Swan of Tounela" as part of a larger work called Four Legends of the Kalevala.

Engraver: Hannu Veijalainen

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”

Edge

"SUOMI FINLAND" (FINLAND in Finnish and Swedish, the two official languages in Finland), followed by three lion's heads.
