Obverse description
Depicts some famous Kuwaiti buildings (Seif Palace, Grand Mosque and Kuwait towers) with 50 in Arabic and English, date in Arabic and English with colored flag of Kuwait above inside a circle ornamented by Islamic ogee arches surrounded by the inscription in Arabic and English. The Grand Mosque (Arabic: المسجد الكبير) is the largest mosque in Kuwait. Its area spans 45,000 square metres (480,000 sq ft), out of which the building itself covers 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft). The main prayer hall is 72 metres (236 ft) wide on all sides, and has teakwood doors. Natural lighting is provided by 144 windows. Seif Palace is a former administrative palace and occupied the former seat of the rule of Kuwait; His Highness the Emir. It is located opposite the Grand Mosque and is highlighted by a distinctive watchtower, covered in blue tiles and with a roof plated in pure gold. Local materials such as clay, rocks, limestone, wood, and metals were used in its construction which took place back in 1904. The palace is one of the oldest buildings in Kuwait and was further renovated in 1909, 1964, & 1987. The flag of Kuwait is divided into three equal horizontal stripes, the top one being green, the middle white and the bottom red, with the side next to the flag pole forming the base of a black trapezoid protruding into the stripes. The colours of the flag are derived from a poem by Safie Al-Deen Al-Hili. Seif Palace with its name and establishment date below surrounded by country name in Arabic and English above and inscription below within and Islamic banner all embellished with Islamic ornaments.
