Description

The Finnish Diet was convened in 1863 after a break of more than half a century. From then on, the Diet met regularly, and active legislative work in Finland began. The Diet of Finland was the legislative assembly of the Grand Duchy of Finland from 1809 to 1906. The Eduskunta, the parliament of Finland, was preceded by the Diet of Finland.

During those years, the political awakening of citizens really got underway, as for the first time Diet records were also in Finnish. New also was the fact that the press was able to write about the Diet, which contributed to the emergence of political debate.

With the beginning of regular meetings of the Diet, the opportunities of Finns to influence affairs in their own country improved in an unprecedented way. The year marked the beginning of a period of illumination for Finnish democracy.

The total mintage of the coin is 6000 pieces of which 200 are numbered. Each numbered Diet of 1863 gold coin is unique since they are individualised by a sequential number stamped on the coin's side. The 200 gold coins struck to commemorate the Diet of 1863 are packaged in collector's boxes, together with a special, proof-quality two-euro coin dedicated to the same theme.
