Description

This variant distinguishes itself from the coins minted between 2005 and 2017 by featuring a small crown atop the eagle's head. The addition of the crown corresponds to the modification of Romania's national emblem, where the eagle now bears a crown.

Coat of arms of Romania with the crown on the head of the eagle, date below.

The Romanian Parliament officially adopted the country's coat of arms on 10 September 1992 as a symbolic representation. The current design is based on the interwar Kingdom of Romania's lesser coat of arms, utilized from 1922 to 1947. Originally crafted in 1921 by the Transylvanian Hungarian heraldist József Sebestyén of Cluj at the request of King Ferdinand I of Romania, it underwent a redesign by Victor Dima. At its core, the emblem features a golden eagle grasping a cross in its beak, along with a mace and a sword in its talons. Additionally, it incorporates the three national flag colors—red, yellow, and blue. Notably, the coat of arms was expanded on 11 July 2016 to include a representation of the Steel Crown of Romania.
