Description

The International Year of the Child was designated by UNESCO in 1979, with the proclamation signed on January 1, 1979, by United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. Serving as a sequel to the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child, this proclamation aimed to highlight global issues affecting children, such as malnutrition and limited access to education. These initiatives later contributed to the establishment of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

A piedfort is an unusually thick coin, often exactly twice the normal weight and thickness of other coins of the same diameter and pattern. Piedforts are not normally circulated, and are only struck for presentation purposes by mint officials (such as patterns), or for collectors, dignitaries, and other VIPs.

Obverse

Depicts the national emblem of the Democratic Republic of the Sudan (1970–1985), denominations on both sides, country name between dates in Gregorian (left) and Islamic year (right) in Arabic numerals below.

The emblem shows a secretarybird bearing a shield from the time of Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi who briefly ruled Sudan in the 19th century. Two scrolls are placed on the arms; the upper one displays the national motto, ("Victory is ours"), and the lower one displays the title of the state.

The secretarybird was chosen as a distinctively Sudanese and indigenous variant of the "Eagle of Saladin" and "Hawk of Quraish" seen in the emblems of some Arab states, and associated with Arab nationalism.

Situated in Omdurman, Sudan, the Qubba or tomb of the Mahdi is the final resting place of Muhammad Ahmad, the leader of an Islamic uprising against Turco-Egyptian Sudan in the late 19th century. Established in 1885 following the Siege of Khartoum, Muhammad Ahmad, who died shortly after the Mahdist victory, was interred at Omdurman.

Reconstructed in 1947 under the guidance of the Mahdi's son, al-Sayyid ʿAbd-al-Raḥman al-Mahdi, the tomb is located adjacent to the Khalifa House Museum. Recognized by UNESCO as a site of 'outstanding cultural value,' it stands as a testament to historical significance.
