The nation gets its name from the Lion Mountains near Freetown. Initially called Serra Leoa (Portuguese for 'lioness mountains') by Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra in 1462, the present name originates from the Venetian spelling introduced by explorer Alvise Cadamosto. This Venetian spelling was later adopted by other European mapmakers.
On April 20, 1960, Milton Margai led a Sierra Leonean delegation of 24 members in constitutional conferences with the Government of Queen Elizabeth II and British Colonial Secretary Iain Macleod in London, negotiating independence. Following the talks' conclusion on May 4, 1960, the United Kingdom agreed to grant Sierra Leone independence on April 27, 1961.
