A centaur, occasionally referred to as a hippocentaur or Ixionidae ("sons of Ixion"), is a mythical creature from Greek mythology. It possesses the upper body of a human and the lower body with legs of a horse and was believed to inhabit the mountains of Thessaly. According to one version of the myth, the centaurs derived their name from Centaurus and, through his brother Lapithes, were related to the legendary tribe of the Lapiths.
