Oliver Cromwell (1599–1658) was an influential English statesman, politician, and soldier, widely recognized as a key figure in the history of the British Isles. His prominence grew during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms from 1639 to 1653, initially as a senior commander in the Parliamentarian army and later as a politician. A strong supporter of the execution of Charles I in January 1649, leading to the establishment of The Protectorate, Cromwell governed as Lord Protector from December 1653 until his death in September 1658. Controversy surrounds Cromwell due to his military role in acquiring political power and the severity of his 1649 campaign in Ireland.
