Description

The initial Luxembourg coins were introduced in 1854, featuring denominations of 2+1⁄2, 5, and 10 centimes. In 1901, the bronze 5- and 10-centime pieces were substituted with cupro-nickel coins. During 1915–1916, occupying German forces issued zinc 5-, 10-, and 25-centime coins. Following the First World War, iron coins in the same denominations were circulated before the reintroduction of cupronickel in 1924, accompanied by nickel 1- and 2-franc coins. The franc coins were inscribed with "Bon Pour," suggesting that they were tokens deemed "good for" 1 or 2 francs, a feature also found on contemporary French and Belgian coins.

During the First World War, Auguste Trémont (1892-1980), a prominent Luxembourgish painter and sculptor, relocated from Paris to Luxembourg. At the request of the Dudelange steelworks management, he created a series of artworks depicting workers in action. Mathias Gaasch, an impressive worker of the time, caught the painter's eye with his powerful stature, prompting Trémont to choose him as a model. This decision gave birth to the painting of the Feierstёppler. Inspired by Trémont's work, Belgian artist Armand Bonnetain (1888–1973) drew the engraving for the coins. The image of the Feierstёppler adorned the one and two Luxembourg Francs coins until 1991.

Henri (born 16 April 1955) is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, reigning since 7 October 2000. He is the eldest son of Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine Charlotte of Belgium, and a first cousin of the current King of the Belgians, Philippe.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
