The beaver, a sizable semiaquatic rodent belonging to the genus Castor, is primarily nocturnal. Renowned for constructing dams, canals, and lodges, beavers rank as the second-largest rodent globally, following the capybara. Their colonies create dams to ensure still, deep water for protection against predators and to facilitate the transportation of food and building materials.

Given its pivotal role in Canada's development through the fur trade, the beaver was officially designated as the national animal in 1975. Its association with Canada dates back to 1678 when it appeared on the coat of arms of the Hudson's Bay Company. As a national symbol, the beaver was chosen as the mascot for the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal, known as "Amik" in Ojibwe, reflecting its enduring significance.
