The caribou, also known as the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), is a circumpolar species of deer native to Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, including tundra, boreal forests, and mountainous areas in northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. The George River herd in Canada, once the second-largest, migrates through the boreal woodland, with past numbers ranging from 28,000 to 385,000. Caribou in North America extend from Alaska through Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, the Canadian Rockies, and the Columbia and Selkirk Mountains.

Throughout history, Arctic communities like the Caribou Inuit, inland-dwelling Inuit in the Kivalliq Region, Caribou Clan in Yukon, Inupiat, Inuvialuit, Hän, Northern Tutchone, and Gwich'in have relied on caribou for sustenance, clothing, and shelter.

Noteworthy is the annual antler growth in both male and female reindeer, with males typically having larger antlers. In festive lore, Santa Claus's reindeer, often depicted with antlers, pull his sleigh to deliver gifts on Christmas Eve.
