Description

The loonie, officially the Canadian one-dollar coin, debuted in 1987 and is crafted in gold tones by the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. The most prevalent versions of the coin show a common loon, a bird found throughout Canada, on the reverse. Various commemorative and specimen-set editions of the coin with special designs replacing the loon on the reverse have been minted over the years.

Depicts a common loon swimming on a lake with a maple leaf within a circle and country name above, facial value below.

The common loon (Gavia immer), a sizable member of the diver family, exhibits a distinctive plumage during breeding, characterized by a black head and neck with a colorful sheen. Non-breeding adults are brownish with dark markings. Both sexes resemble each other, with males being notably heavier. During the breeding season, loons inhabit lakes in Canada, the northern United States, and parts of Greenland and Iceland.
