Issue date December 9, 2007
Engraver: Ruben Nutels

Obverse

Depicts a pair of cornucopia filled with fruit and grain with a pomegranate in between; pearls around the top half of the coin; the State symbol.

The design originates from a historic coin dating back to the era of John Hyrcanus, a prominent figure among the Maccabees succeeding Judas. Serving as high priest and ruler of the Hasmonean Dynasty from 135-104 B.C., his reign marked the emergence of Jewish sects like the Pharisees and Sadducees, notable in New Testament narratives. Hyrcanus notably expanded Maccabean territory by annexing Idumaea, leading to the eventual rise of Herod. He also annexed Samaritan lands and razed the Samaritan temple on Mount Gerizim, referenced in the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4:20.

Reverse

Depicts the words "2 New Sheqalim" in Hebrew, Arabic and English; the year of minting in Hebrew; the word "Israel" in Hebrew, Arabic and English; pearls around the top half of the coin.
