Agriculture has been a longstanding pillar of Oman's economy. To diversify from oil dependence, the government has prioritized the expansion of sectors like agriculture, fishing, industry, and mining. Economic campaigns such as the "Years of Agriculture" and "Years of Industry" have aimed to stimulate private-sector investment, with substantial financial support provided through institutions like the Oman Bank for Agriculture and Fisheries. This bank offers concessional loans to individuals engaged primarily in farming or fishing activities. Moreover, development programs align with the government's indigenization policy, incorporating significant funding towards this goal.
Qaboos bin Said Al Said (1940–2020) was the Sultan of Oman from 23 July 1970 until his death. A fifteenth-generation descendant of the founder of the House of Al Said, he was the longest-serving leader in the Middle East and Arab world at the time of his death.
