The 10 Euro gold coin from the Series Fountains of Italy is dedicated to the famous fountain of Fontana Pretoria of Palermo.
The Renaissance Praetorian Fountain (Italian: Fontana Pretoria), situated in Palermo's historic Piazza Pretoria, is the symbol of Palermo and the timeless beauty of Sicilian culture. It is a grand structure dominating the square's western side, originally constructed in 1544 in Florence by Francesco Camilliani before being relocated to Palermo in 1574. Commissioned for the garden of don Luigi de Toledo, the fountain boasted 48 statues and an arbor of 90 wooden columns. Sold to Palermo due to financial troubles, it arrived in 644 pieces, necessitating adjustments and completion by Camillo Camilliani and Michelangelo Naccherino. Despite once symbolizing municipal corruption and earning the square the moniker "Piazza della Vergogna" (Square of Shame), the fountain underwent restoration between 1998 and 2003. Featuring Twelve Olympians, mythological figures, animals, and representations of Palermo's rivers, it remains a significant landmark in the city.
