Coin description
The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), situated on the bank of the Danube in Budapest, between Széchenyi rakpart and Akadémia utca, stands as Hungary's most prominent and esteemed scholarly society. Its core duties encompass advancing scientific research, disseminating findings, supporting research and development endeavors, and representing Hungarian scientific achievements both domestically and internationally. Established in 1825, spurred by Count István Széchenyi's generous offer during a district session of the Diet in Pressburg (Pozsony, now Bratislava), the academy's initial focus was on nurturing the Hungarian language and promoting scientific and artistic endeavors in Hungarian. It officially adopted its present name in 1845. The academy's primary edifice, designed in the Renaissance Revival architectural style by Friedrich August Stüler, was inaugurated in 1865. Engraver: József Garányi 150th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) is a Hungarian scientific body whose main tasks include the cultivation of science, dissemination of scientific achievements, and representation of Hungarian science. Until 2019, it also possessed research institutes and significantly influenced a substantial portion of the Hungarian research network. At the Hungarian Diet of 1825 on November 2nd, Máriássy Sáros, a representative from a Hungarian county, raised the necessity of establishing a Hungarian scientific institute. The following day, on November 3rd, 1825, Felsőbüki Nagy Pál delivered a particularly stirring speech, vehemently denouncing the neglect of the nation's and language's interests by deteriorating aristocrats. Subsequently, Count István Széchenyi made a pivotal and memorable offer. Although belonging to the upper house, he attended the session of lower house representatives. Following Felsőbüki's speech, to the surprise of those present, Széchenyi unexpectedly requested the floor and offered the annual income of his estates, 60,000 forints, for the establishment of a Hungarian Scholarly Society. The actual operation began in 1830 under the name Hungarian Scholarly Society, after the monarch accepted the statutes. At the directorate election meeting on November 17, 1830, Teleki József was elected as the first president, known at the time as the presiding officer, with Széchenyi István as vice-president, and Döbrentei Gábor as secretary. The first regular members, totaling 23, were appointed on the same day by the Directorate Council led by Teleki József. The number of honorary members was 24. The first general meeting of the Hungarian Scholarly Society was held on February 14, 1831. In 1840, the name of the Hungarian Scholarly Society was changed to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1844, the library of the MTA was opened. Engraver: József Garányi
