Classified within the superfamily Papilionoidea, they typically range from medium-sized to large butterflies. A distinctive trait of many species is the reduction of one pair of forelegs, with several displaying the habit of resting with their colorful wings spread flat. They are commonly referred to as brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies because they often perch on four legs, with the other pair curled up; certain species feature forelegs adorned with brush-like hairs, lending to this alternate name. While many species boast vibrant hues, including well-known ones like emperors, monarch butterflies, admirals, tortoiseshells, and fritillaries, their underwings often exhibit dull tones. In some cases, these underwings mimic dead leaves or appear considerably lighter, aiding in camouflage and blending with their surroundings.
