The Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB), also known as the Italian Companies and Exchange Commission, is the governmental body in Italy tasked with overseeing the regulation of the Italian securities market, which encompasses the supervision of the Borsa Italiana, Italy's stock exchange.
Established in 1974, CONSOB was created through legislative measures consolidating the responsibilities previously held by the Italian Ministry of Treasury. Initially focused on monitoring securities markets, its mandate has since evolved and expanded. In 1983, legislation broadened its scope to include safeguarding public investments, followed by the grant of legal personality and autonomy in 1985. Subsequently, in 1991, CONSOB was empowered to audit securities brokerage firms and oversee insider trading activities.
