Description

On the morning of June 30, 1946, at seven o'clock, a significant celebration marked the inaugural export of Kuwaiti oil. This event, presided over by the late Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the then Amir of Kuwait, was attended by eminent national officials, the Political Resident in the Gulf area, the Political Agent in Kuwait, and an esteemed gathering of guests. Southwell, Director of Kuwait Oil Company Ltd, London, commenced the proceedings by welcoming Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his entourage, leading them to the ceremonial location where a silver wheel awaited to signify the occasion. Sheikh Ahmad initiated the movement of the wheel, inaugurating the flow of the first Kuwaiti crude oil shipment through an offshore pipeline to the British tanker Fusilier. A total of 10,567 tons of crude oil were loaded within 11 hours and 13 minutes, averaging 950 tons per hour.

Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah (1926–2006) of the al-Sabah dynasty, was the Emir of Kuwait and Commander of the Military of Kuwait; serving from 31 December 1977 until his death. He had previously served as minister of finance and Economy from 1962 until 1965, when he was appointed prime minister prior to becoming Kuwait's ruler.
