Description

Guru Nanak (1469–1539) was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His birth is celebrated as Guru Nanak Gurpurab in October–November.

Nanak is known for spreading the message of Ik Onkar ('One God') across Asia, emphasizing the divine presence in every creation and the eternal Truth. He established a spiritual, social, and political platform based on equality, love, goodness, and virtue.

His teachings, comprising 974 poetic hymns or shabda, are enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Major prayers include Japji Sahib, Asa di Var, and Sidh Gosht. It is believed in Sikhism that Nanak's spirit and authority were passed on to the subsequent Gurus.
