Description

The 26th European Athletics Championships took place from June 7 to 12, 2024, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy. This marked the third time Italy hosted the event, following the inaugural 1934 edition in Turin and the 1974 edition at the same venue. Notably, it was the second time in 50 years that Rome and the Stadio Olimpico hosted the championships. The stadium, which also hosted the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1987 World Championships in Athletics, underwent renovation in 1990 and can accommodate up to 70,000 spectators.

The coin also features the value "10 EURO" on the left, while at the top left, "PIETRO MENNEA," "ARROW OF THE SOUTH," and "2024" signify the year of the coin's issuance. In the center, the letter "R" identifies the Mint of Rome.

Pietro Paolo Mennea (1952–2013), known as "the Arrow of the South" (Italian: la Freccia del Sud), was an Italian sprinter and politician. He achieved his greatest success in the 200m event, securing a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and setting a world record with a time of 19.72 seconds in September 1979. This record remained unbroken for nearly 17 years, marking the longest duration in the event's history, and it still stands as the European record. Mennea holds the distinction of being the only male sprinter to qualify for four consecutive 200 meters Olympic finals, spanning from 1972 to 1984.
