Djibouti adopted its national emblem upon gaining independence from France on June 27, 1977. The emblem features laurel branches on the sides and encloses a vertical spear with a shield in front. Below the shield, two hands holding large machetes represent the nation's main ethnic groups, the Afar and the Issa. At the top of the spear is a red star, symbolizing unity between the Issa and Afar peoples.

Mint mark: Cornucopia, horn of plenty (Paris Mint - Paris until 1972 or Pessac from 1973).

Privy marks of the Mint's Chief Engravers: Pentagon with letters AG, MP and YS - Yves Sampo (2011–2020)

The Djibouti spurfowl or Djibouti francolin (Pternistis ochropectus), a critically endangered bird species, is native to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa. It has grayish-brown plumage with white stripes and streaks, black markings on the head, and a short tail, measuring 35 cm (1.15 ft) in length and weighing 940 g (33 oz). Found mainly in African juniper forests, which are dwindling, it also inhabits box-tree forests. This shy bird feeds on berries, seeds, and termites and breeds from December to February. With a 90% population decline in two decades, mainly due to habitat degradation like overgrazing, it faces critical endangerment. Conservation efforts involve restoring juniper forests, conducting surveys, and raising awareness.
