Below the shield, two hands holding large machetes represent the nation's main ethnic groups, the Afar and the Issa. At the top of the spear is a red star, symbolizing unity between the Issa and Afar peoples.

The giraffe, a substantial African hoofed mammal classified under the genus Giraffa, holds the distinction of being the tallest terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant on the planet. Historically, giraffes have been regarded as a single species, Giraffa camelopardalis, encompassing nine subspecies. However, recent studies incorporating mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analysis, along with morphological measurements, have led researchers to propose the possibility of delineating them into as many as eight existing species. Additionally, the fossil record documents seven other extinct species of Giraffa.
