Description

Commemorative coins have been an Olympic tradition since the ancient Games, formally organized as collectors’ items starting with the Helsinki 1952 Games. The Rio 2016 Games marked the first time Brazil issued a commemorative coin collection for the Olympics.

To celebrate the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Brazilian Central Bank created 36 commemorative coins. This collection includes sixteen R$1 coins for regular circulation, along with four gold and sixteen silver coins.

Football has been included in every Summer Olympic Games as a men's competition sport, except in 1896 and 1932. Women's football was added in 1996.

Football, or soccer, is played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball on a rectangular field with goals at each end. The objective is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. It is the world's most popular sport, with 250 million players in over 200 nations.

The modern game originated in Britain, with The Football Association forming in London in 1863 to standardize the game. The term "association football" was coined to distinguish it from other football variants, like rugby. "Soccer," an abbreviation of "association," emerged in the 1880s in British universities. It was an uncontroversial alternative to "football" until the late twentieth century.
