Description

Around the World in Eighty Days (French: Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours) is an adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in French in 1872. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a wager of £20,000 (equivalent to £1.9 million in 2019) set by his friends at the Reform Club. It is one of Verne's most acclaimed works.[4]

Phileas Fogg is a wealthy English gentleman living a solitary life in London. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives modestly and carries out his habits with mathematical precision. He is a member of the Reform Club, where he spends the best part of his days. Having dismissed his valet for bringing him shaving water at a temperature slightly lower than expected, Fogg hires Frenchman Jean Passepartout as a replacement.

On the evening of 2 October 1872, while at the Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000, half of his fortune, from his fellow club members to complete such a journey within this period. With Passepartout accompanying him, Fogg departs from London by train at 8:45 p.m.; to win the wager, he must return to the club by this same time on 21 December, 80 days later. They take Fogg's remaining £20,000 with them to cover expenses during the journey.

Djibouti adopted its national emblem upon gaining independence from France on June 27, 1977. The emblem features laurel branches on the sides and encloses a vertical spear with a shield in front. Below the shield, two hands holding large machetes represent the nation's main ethnic groups, the Afar and the Issa. At the top of the spear is a red star, symbolizing unity between the Issa and Afar peoples.

Jules Gabriel Verne (1828–1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright renowned for his popular adventure novels like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1872), created in collaboration with publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel. His meticulously researched works, typically set in the late 19th century, reflect contemporary technological advancements.

Besides novels, Verne authored plays, short stories, poetry, and various scientific and literary studies. His works have been widely adapted across film, television, comics, theater, opera, music, and video games.

Though initially labeled as a genre fiction or children's author in English-speaking regions due to abridged translations, Verne's literary stature has steadily risen since the 1980s. Internationally, he's been one of the most translated authors, often hailed as a pioneer of science fiction alongside figures like H. G. Wells and Hugo Gernsback. By the 2010s, he became the most translated French author worldwide, with 2005 being celebrated as "Jules Verne Year" in France to mark the centenary of his passing.
