Abdullah's eldest son, Talal, ascended to the throne as King of Jordan. Talal then appointed his son Hussein as crown prince on 9 September 1951. However, Talal's reign was short-lived, lasting less than thirteen months, as Parliament compelled him to abdicate due to his diagnosed schizophrenia. During his brief rule, Talal implemented a modern and somewhat liberal constitution in 1952, which remains in effect today. Following Talal's abdication, Hussein was declared king on 11 August 1952, assuming the throne just three months before his 17th birthday. Upon receiving a telegram in Lausanne, Switzerland, addressed to 'His Majesty King Hussein', he realized that his days as a schoolboy were over. Returning home to a jubilant reception, Hussein began his reign amid enthusiastic crowds.
