The Esztergom Basilica, originally named the Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Adalbert, is a prominent feature in Esztergom, Hungary. It's the country's largest church and one of Europe's biggest cathedrals, with its towering dome dominating the town's skyline. Consecrated on August 31, 1856, before its completion, the ceremony was attended by Emperor Franz Joseph, with Franz Liszt conducting his Esztergom Mass during the event.
Construction began in the 19th century and ended in the same century, replacing several earlier religious structures. The basilica's architecture, mainly Neoclassical with some Baroque touches, is renowned for its grandeur. It's not just a religious site but a cultural and historical gem, housing a wealth of art including paintings, sculptures, and frescoes. Visitors can explore its vast interior, climb to the dome's top for panoramic views, and delve into its rich history through guided tours and exhibits.
Spanning 5,660 square meters, the basilica is 118 meters long and 49 meters wide, with a majestic hemispherical dome supported by 24 columns. Inside, the dome rises to 71.5 meters, with a diameter of 33.5 meters, making it Hungary's second tallest building, reaching precisely 100 meters from the crypt to the top of the dome. Hosting religious ceremonies, concerts, and events year-round, the basilica is a symbol of faith, history, and architectural splendor in Hungary.
