Abdullah accompanied his father on various diplomatic missions, including meetings with leaders from the Soviet Union and the United States. He also joined his father on visits to Damascus to meet Hafez Al-Assad and to Baghdad to meet Saddam Hussein (before the 1990 Gulf War). In 1997, Abdullah oversaw military exercises during visits by Israeli military officials to Jordan, and in 1998, he was tasked with personally delivering a message to Muammar Gaddafi.

Following the king's death on February 7, 1999, after a prolonged battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Abdullah succeeded to the throne. His 47-year reign spanned four tumultuous decades marked by the Arab–Israeli conflict and the Cold War. Within hours of his father's passing, Abdullah appeared before an emergency session of the Jordanian parliament, where, accompanied by his brothers Hassan and Mohammed, he solemnly swore to uphold the constitution and serve the nation. Speaker of the Senate Zaid Al-Rifai led the assembly in reciting Al-Fatiha, praying for Abdullah's guidance and protection. His official investiture occurred on June 9, 1999, with an elaborate ceremony at Raghadan Palace, followed by a motorcade procession through Amman alongside his wife, Rania, then the youngest queen in the world, attended by 800 dignitaries.
