Gyula Castle, situated in the downtown area of Békés County, Gyula, stands as the sole intact lowland Gothic brick castle from the former Kingdom of Hungary, serving as a significant fortress from the 16th century onward. Originally granted to Ban Maróti János in 1403 by King Sigismund of Hungary, the castle witnessed various owners and historical events. Despite facing sieges and conflicts, the castle remained unconquered by force, often changing hands through negotiations rather than capitulation. Today, it serves as a museum and visitor center, offering insights into nearly seven centuries of history across 24 exhibition rooms. Visitors can explore authentic living quarters, a chapel, and various workshops on the ground floor, while the castle theater hosts outdoor performances during the summer months.
