Description

The Hungarian Maltese Charity Service stands as a prominent Catholic charitable network and a distinguished public benefit organization within Hungary. Affiliated with the international family of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), its activities are overseen by the Hospitaller of the Hungarian Order of Malta. Since the late 1980s, this organization has been dedicated to providing assistance to those in need, both within Hungary and in neighboring regions.

Formally established in Hungary on February 4, 1989, its roots trace back to the spring of 1986, when the Hungarian Order of Malta initiated a comprehensive healthcare initiative aimed at bolstering the struggling Hungarian healthcare system through the donation of medicines and medical equipment.

The organization's activities encompass a wide range of initiatives, including the collection of donations—both in-kind and monetary—for public purposes, direct assistance to those in need, support for healthcare, social services, and child welfare institutions, establishment and operation of healthcare, social, and child welfare facilities and services, as well as the organization of spiritual programs aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being, social cohesion, and collaboration across various segments of society.

Elizabeth of Hungary (1207–1231), also known as Elisabeth of Thuringia, held the title of princess of the Kingdom of Hungary and the landgravine of Thuringia.

Married at the age of 14 and widowed by the age of 20, Elizabeth, upon her husband's death, reclaimed her dowry and utilized the funds to establish a hospital where she personally tended to the sick. Following her passing in 1231 at the age of 24, she became an emblem of Christian charity and was canonized on May 25, 1235. The Catholic Church venerates her as a saint, and she is revered as the patroness of the Third Order of St. Francis, of which she was an early member.
