Description

Miklós Zrínyi (1620–1664) was a Croatian aristocrat who held various titles and roles, including Croatian ban, perpetual ispán of Zala and Somogy counties, royal councilor, and captain of Légrád. Zrínyi was celebrated as a poet, military strategist, and statesman, focusing primarily on military affairs.

He played a pivotal role in protecting Hungary from Turkish invasions and organizing resistance efforts. His military campaigns included successful engagements against the Turks in 1651–1652 and the formation of alliances to counter Ottoman advances. However, the decision by the Vienna court to seek peace with the Sultan undermined his accomplishments. Zrínyi's faith in the Habsburgs weakened, but he remained dedicated to expelling the Turks, exemplified by the construction of New Zrínyi Castle for the defense of Muraköz in 1661.

In 1663, Zrínyi formed coalitions with other Hungarian nobles to resist Turkish attacks and was appointed chief Hungarian commander by Emperor Leopold I. Despite achieving notable victories, he tragically perished in an accident during a hunting expedition in 1664.
