Description

Every day in Belgium, approximately 205 individuals receive a cancer diagnosis. In a special gesture of awareness and solidarity, the Royal Mint of Belgium has issued a uniquely designed 2 euro coin, aimed not only at those directly affected but also at everyone connected to this cause.

Obverse

Depicts a stylized rainbow, representing hope for a world without cancer, alongside the country code "BE" and the year "2024" in the upper right corner. In the center, there is a portrayal of a heartbeat line resembling a consciousness ribbon, commonly worn as a symbol of solidarity. Positioned at the bottom of the image is the bilingual inscription "Fight Against Cancer" in French above and Dutch below. The mint marks of the Royal Dutch Mint and the current Belgian Mint Master are located at the bottom, with the designer's initials placed to the left under the electrocardiogram. The outer ring showcases the 12 stars of the European flag.

• Royal Dutch Mint's mintmark: Caduceus or Mercury's wand, a short staff entwined by two serpents
• Royal Belgian Mint Director's privy mark: Aster flower in front of an Erlenmeyer flask (Giovanni Van de Velde)
• Engraver: Iris Bruijns (IB)

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
