The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued gold coins with face values of 50,000 and 5,000 forint and a non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of 2,000 forint to commemorate the 425th anniversary of the first complete translation of the Bible into Hungarian.
The Vizsoly Bible, also called Károli Bible, is the oldest complete Bible translated into Hungarian. Translated by Gáspár Károli and his fellow ministers in 1590, and printed with the assistance of Bálint Mantskovits, it holds a significant place in Hungarian cultural heritage. Károli, a Calvinist pastor, began the translation in 1586, completing it in three years with the help of at least three assistants. The printing process, overseen by Mantskovits, began in 1589 and concluded in 1590, despite initial challenges and accusations. This monumental work, preserving its archaic linguistic state, remains a testament to the enduring legacy of Hungarian literature and religious tradition.
