Description

Kálmán Széll (1843-1915) was a prominent Hungarian politician who served as Minister of Finance in the Kálmán Tisza government and later as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1899 to 1903. He was also a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

In 1875, Széll became Minister of Finance, where he founded the Austro-Hungarian Bank, stabilized the national budget, and restored the country's credit. His tax increases helped resolve financial crises and paved the way for economic stability.

As the 12th Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hungary, Széll served from 1899 until his resignation in 1903. After stepping down, he retired to his estate in Rátót. He received numerous honors, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold.

Elisabeth Bridge (Hungarian: Erzsébet híd) is the third newest bridge in Budapest, Hungary, connecting Buda and Pest across the River Danube. Located at the Danube's narrowest point in Budapest, it spans just 290 meters. The bridge is named after Elisabeth of Bavaria, a beloved queen and empress of Austria-Hungary, who was assassinated in 1898. The original bridge, built between 1897 and 1903 in an eclectic flamboyant style, was destroyed during World War II. A simpler, brutalist-style bridge without ornamentation was constructed between 1961 and 1964.
