The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and branded as Rio 2016, took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to 21, 2016, with some events starting on August 3. Announced as the host city in 2009, Rio was the first South American city to host the Olympics.
The Games featured 11,238 athletes from 207 nations, including newcomers Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Refugee Olympic Team. Athletes competed in 306 events across 28 sports, including the newly added rugby sevens and golf. Competitions were held at 33 venues in Rio and five other Brazilian cities.
These Olympics marked several firsts: the first in South America, the first in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first entirely in the host country's winter, and the first under IOC President Thomas Bach. The United States led the medal count with 46 golds and 121 total medals. Great Britain and China followed in second and third place, respectively. Brazil won its highest ever total with 19 medals. Ten nations, including Bahrain and Fiji, won their first-ever gold medals.
