Description
The Reformation, also known as the "renewal of faith," was a pivotal movement in 16th-century Europe that challenged the Catholic Church's authority and marked the rise of Protestantism, signaling the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era. Sparked by Martin Luther's 95 Theses on October 31, 1517, which condemned the sale of indulgences and promoted salvation by faith alone, the movement quickly spread across the Holy Roman Empire and beyond.
Reformers like Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin in Switzerland soon joined Luther, leading to the establishment of various Protestant churches, most notably the Lutheran and Reformed Churches. By the mid-16th century, Luther's doctrines had reached Hungary, where the urban bourgeoisie and different ethnic groups formed Lutheran churches based on his teachings. Today, Reformed Christians constitute approximately 15-20% of the Protestant population in Europe.
