Zsuzsanna Kossuth (1817-1854) was a prominent figure in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, fighting for freedom alongside her brother Lajos Kossuth. Married to Rudolf Meszlényi, she was an active member of the National Protective Association. In April 1849, her brother appointed her chief nurse of all military hospitals in Hungary, where she established 72 hospitals and organized volunteer nurses. Considered a pioneer in modern nursing, she predates Florence Nightingale by 5-6 years. After the revolution's defeat, she faced Austrian arrest and harassment. The intervention of American authorities secured her release in 1851, with the condition of not returning to Hungary. She subsequently immigrated to the US, where she died in New York on June 29, 1854, from a lung ailment.
