The University of Pécs (Hungarian: Pécsi Tudományegyetem, PTE) is one of Hungary's largest higher education institutions. Its history dates back to 1367 when Pope Urban V, at the request of King Louis I the Great, granted permission to establish the university, making it the first in Hungary and the fourth in Central Europe. The university's official successor is the Elisabeth University of Pozsony (Bratislava), founded in 1912. In 1921, after Bratislava became part of Czechoslovakia, the university relocated to Pécs. In 1951, the Faculty of Medicine became independent but remerged in 2000 with the Janus Pannonius University, forming the current University of Pécs.
